Self-Care for Beginners: A Guide to Meditation
During this time of year, it is easy to feel trapped under pressure. From finals to work shifts to Kanye's recent tweets, our everyday views of life can either be used as motivation for the future or can mentally break us.
Luckily there is an answer to our problems! Meditation is said to be one of the most powerful methods to balancing life and self-love. It reduces stress levels, improves productivity and overall creates a peaceful sense of being.
The act of meditation is solely designed based on the individual. A lot of methods won’t adhere to your everyday mental state. It is important you know “why” you’re meditating. Whether it’s to relieve stress, stop procrastination, ease anxiety or simply to stay in tune with yourself, you want to create a meditation process that fits YOU.
Below, are a few easy steps to begin your meditation process: (You can always add your own flavor to the procedure once you're comfortable with the process).Clear your space. No noises/distractions or clutter surrounding your meditation space. This is a sacred area and every ounce of energy contributes to how effective meditation is. You want to be comfortable while meditating, and this doesn’t necessarily mean sitting on the floor.
1. Meditation can be done with a friend or alone. Either way, you want to begin by focusing on your breathing. Natural light breaths, inhaling and exhaling to the rhythm of your heartbeat/pulse.
2. Ever heard of your third eye? Its real! This can be channeled through meditation. Your mind will wander while you’re practicing breathing methods, and that is OK. But try to center your energy on that third eye. What characteristics are you wanting to change? What is your current state of mentality?
3. Turn on earth/water sounds. If it’s your surroundings/environment/relationships that are triggering stress, these sounds can take your mind to places of relaxation. Breathe slowly and listen to the sounds of peace and tranquility.
4. Take it slow. Try adding a new step to your meditation process each time. Meditate for 5-10 minutes to start with, and longer is needed. Tell your friends, gather around and have a session. You’ll be 10x more productive and level-headed in your future days.
